April 18th: 2008 Spring Cleanup on May 3rd
A message from our Field manager:
All members are invited to join in the spring clean up on Saturday May 3, 2008. Activity will start officially at 9AM. Captains have been identified for various tasks: runway fertilizing, starting sites, shelter, frequency impound, parking, toilets etc. Given that we have a big IMAC event on May 17-18 we will want to do a bit more than usual. Bring your gloves, good shoes, shovels and rakes. We will also need more fertilizer spreaders.
The field is open and in great shape. There is still some snow near the trees to the south but the runway, pits, and parking areas are dry and solid. However there will be no flying on May 3 until all the work is complete. The better the turnout the sooner we will be able to fly.
April 8th: 2008 training season starts April 30th
The 2008 training season will start Apil 30th. This means that on Wednesday evenings student pilots will have priority.

Sept 19th: Glider Field Change
The current glider field has moved to a new location on Petersen's Field. We are currently flying off the eastern field north of the access road just south of the office. The office is on the corner of this field.
Sept 18th: Drummond Field excavation update
The heavy equipment working on the Drummond Field is there to excavate sand from the easternmost part of the field. The existing runway and flight activities will not be affected by this and our lease on the field remains in place. In fact, the clearing of trees and leveling of ground on the far side of the runway has improved conditions for anyone making an "out" landing. Members who have questions regarding the excavation activities are asked to contact Andre Blais.

March 30th: Drummond Field Cleanup
Drummond field cleanup is scheduled for April 14th. There will be no flying during the cleanup but flying will resume once maintenance has been completed. The more members we have, the faster flying time will come. So come out if you can. Bring some boots and work gloves if you have them.

July 2nd: Power field training nights resume
Since the Drummond field is open the power training nights will resume at the Drummond field. Training starts around 1700 and is free to all members. Please contact the CFI for more information.
June 28: Drummond field is now OPEN
ORCC Members:
This is the President's Message you've been patiently waiting for…our new powered field is now open for flying…just in time for the long week-end!!! Please feel free to use at your convenience. There are no restrictions on time of day (like our old field).
Here are a number of important issues I'd like to bring to your attention:
1) YOU ARE REQUIRED TO READ, UNDERSTAND, AND ABIDE BY THE NEW RULES AND REGULATIONS FOR FLIGHT OPERATIONS AT THE NEW FIELD. THESE ARE AVAILABLE ON THE CLUB'S WEBSITE. BE SURE TO READ BEFORE YOU COME OUT TO FLY. While you're at it, please review ALL of the regulations. Some of the details regarding frequency control have changed too (float pond and glider field regs remain unchanged).
2) The grass is still young and long (even though it has been cut). Please try to minimize the amount of foot traffic on the runway surface for the next while.
3) We are using a new gate lock at the new field. New keys are available from Rick Ward, our Drummond Field Manager for $3. Rick's e-mail and phone number are on the Contact List on the club's website.
4) Shahram Ghorashi, our CFI (Powered), has informed me that Student Training Nights will start up again next week - Wednesday, July 5th.
The field is still very much a work in progress and we will be calling on members to assist with various activities in the near future. Thank you to everyone who has given their time, interest, enthusiasm, and support to bring Drummond Field to fruition (from abandoned Xmas tree farm to RC model flying field). It is a true honour for me to be your President. As I hope you will agree, we now have one of the best model airplane flying fields in the region - a long, wide grass field that can accommodate virtually any type or configuration of model from small to large - free of powerlines, berms, and sun in your eyes! :-)
Enjoy…I hope to see you at the field this week-end!
John Weekes
President, Ottawa Remote Control Club
June 19: New rules for Drummond field posted (Field is still closed)
The revised operational rules for the Drummond field have been posted. Please note that the field is still closed as the grass on the runway developed.
June 1: West-End power field is closed permanently
As of today, June 1, 2006, the ORCC no longer has legitimate access to the City of Ottawa property on Trail Road. Please do not enter this location for any reason. Any member entering onto this property will be considered by the City as a trespasser and may be dealt with accordingly. Thank you for your cooperation.
I'm happy to report that, given the very favourable growing conditions this Spring (lots of rain and now warm temps and sun), the grass at our new location - Drummond Field - 4550 Cambrian Road, is growing quite quickly. However, the new site is not yet ready for flying. We are hopeful that we can start flying at the field around the beginning of July (no promises). Until then, no flying of any variety is permitted at our new field. This will be strictly enforced. Members will be contacted by e-mail either by me or the Drummond Field Manager, as soon as the field is deemed ready for use.
We are in the process of finalizing the new Rules and Regulations governing flight operations at Drummond Field. Once completed, they will be posted on the club's website. They are straightforward and reasonable.
The members and Executive of the Anrprior Radio Control Club have graciously invited any ORCC member in good standing to fly at their field during the interim period - free of charge. A map to their field is attached. If you do make use of the Arnprior club's facility please be sure to learn and abide by their club's Rules and Regulations and I would suggest that you make a point of thanking them for providing us with this great opportunity. Be sure to bring along your proof of MAAC (it should already be prominently displayed on your field box, right?). I am confident that our members will serve as excellent ambassadors for our club and will ensure that we maintain the great relations we already enjoy with our friends up the line.
In addition, for you powered folks out there...now might be the time to pick up a set of floats and/or acquire that 3m glider you've been dreaming about, to make use of the ORCC's other great flying sites (i.e., the float pond and glider field).
May 23: Power field training night cancelled after May 31st
As of May 31st all training nights for powered flying are cancelled until further notice. Once we are able to fly again at Drummond field Shahram will send out a notice to members that training nights have resumed.
May 18: Power field training night change for May 31st
Since May31st is the last day we have access to the West-End field we will need to perform a number of moving activities including removing locks and pilot fences. As such the training night is moved from Wed May 31st to Tue May 30th. Training nights are cancelled after this date until we have opened Drummond field.
May 5: June 7th membership dues increase
The join page has been updated with information on the upcoming membership dues increase on June 7th, please go to the Join section for more information.
May 1: Drummond field update 2
- Runway and Helipad have been fully graded, leveled, and packed.
- 28 loads of special topsoil mix have been applied and spread.
- Seeding will take place on Tuesday, May 2nd.
- Many of the small Xmas trees on the north side of the runway have been cleared by club work parties (additional tree clearing will continue in the coming weeks).
- City of Ottawa has confirmed that our last day at West-end field is May 31st.
- Volunteers will be needed in the coming weeks to assist with 1) further field preparation, and 2) relocation of club assets to Drummond Field.
- We will be without a powered field for the month of June (possibly longer). Club members should make alternate arrangements to fly during this period.
- Flying is NOT PERMITTED at Drummond Field until a formal announcement is made via e-mail from the club President. At that time, new keys to the gate will be distributed to current members.
April 29: Glider field is open
The Peterson's have given permission for us to use the glider field. Please ensure you follow the glider field procedures and do not walk on wet ground, leave any footprints, or disturb newly seeded areas. We are currently using the south field near the pond.
April 28: Drummond field update
Photos of the construction continue to be posted in the gallery.
- The City of Ottawa has given us official notification that they will terminate the lease for the West-end Field on May 27, 2006
- The ORCC has reached a long-term leasing agreement with the Drummond Corporation to rent a large field located at 4550 Cambrian Road
- Heavy equipment work has commenced at the new site to prepare a suitable runway, pits, and parking area.
- Work to prepare the field for use will continue during the month of April and likely into May. This will include levelling/packing and application of grass seed on the runway (approx. 600'x100')
- IMPORTANT: ORCC members are NOT permitted to fly at the new location until official notification is sent out by the club President. Our very expensive landscaping can be easily damaged by being walked on or used before the grass matures.
April 2nd: Wednesday Training Nights
The Wednesday training nights are starting on April 5th at the West-End power field. After 17:00 on Wednesday evening the field is reserved for training flights only. For more information please contact Shahram.
